SEO Enhanced Wordpress Theme: CSS Magic SEO
Posted July 22, 2008 by Mister Knowitall

Move your content to the top of the page for better SEO with this neat CSS theme.

One thing I’ve found as I’ve researched SEO is that a number of people claim (1, 2, 3) search engine algorithms look at your page from the top down, giving a higher weighting to the content at the top in determining what your page is about and what keywords are important in it.

So what do we put at the top of our pages, our content? No. If you read a page, top-down from the <body> tag, you’ll find all sorts of stuff before the content: header graphics, image maps, navigational links… Some people even recommend making sure that in a multiple-column blog, your content is in the leftmost column because that keeps your content higher on the page.

But thanks to CSS we are not slaves to clunky table layouts. With a little CSS magic, we can put content where we want it in both the flow of the HTML document and the flow of the rendered page.

  1. Don Miller Says:

    Your theme appears at http://test.nattywp.com/?preview_theme=CSSMagicSEO800Simple
in which child pages and child categories are shown. Unfortunately, download from their site does not explain how to achieve that beautiful effect.
Could someone help me with this????

  2. Business Website Design Says:

Great idea, see I know you should have your most important content at the top left of your code but I never worried about the header and such but you gave me the idea that having your content before the header might be of some benefit.

    Don,

Sorry I’ve been away so long. Between a short-term contract, a new baby, and some health issues, I’ve let the site languish for a couple of months.

Anyway, if you haven’t found the answer yet, you go into the sidebar widget options, select “Categories” and put it into your active widgets. Then select edit from its tab in the active widgets list and you’ll see display options… “Show as dropdown,” “show post counts,” and “show hierarchy.”

Select “show hierarchy,” click “change” to save that edit, then click “save changes” to make the change live. Voila.
